Bottom line

Square is Block's point-of-sale and business platform for in-person and online selling, spanning payment hardware, POS software, invoicing, appointments, inventory, payroll, marketing and banking. More than four million sellers use it, with the deepest coverage in food and beverage, retail, beauty and services. Entry is a free plan priced per transaction, so first value arrives in days, with paid tiers and add-ons for advanced operations.

Frequently asked questions

What does Square actually cost per year?

The core plan is free and you pay per transaction: 2.6% + 15¢ for in-person card payments, 3.3% + 30¢ online and on invoices, and 3.5% + 15¢ for manually keyed payments. Paid feature tiers add monthly fees, Square Pro is custom-priced for merchants processing over $250,000 a year, and add-ons include the KDS app at $30/mo per device and the Kiosk app at $50/mo per device. Square states there are no hidden fees or locked-in contracts.

How long does Square take to implement?

Fast. You can sign up, download the free POS app and take a payment the same day, and Square publishes a customer example of onboarding a new location in about 15 minutes. Hardware such as readers, Terminal, Stand and Register ships preconfigured, and the free plan carries no implementation fee. Complex multi-location rollouts with payroll, inventory and Pro onboarding take longer and are scoped by Square's team.

Is Square secure and compliant?

Square states it is ISO 27001 certified and PCI Data Security Standard Level 1 compliant, and acts as merchant of record so merchants do not each validate PCI compliance. Card-present payments are encrypted end to end, with 2-step verification, passkeys, employee permissions and machine-learning fraud monitoring. The pages reviewed do not claim SOC 2, HIPAA or FedRAMP, so regulated buyers should confirm those separately via the Trust Center.

Does Square replace our ERP or accounting system?

No. Square is the commerce, payments and operations layer. It integrates with cloud accounting software such as Xero and QuickBooks so transactions flow into your books, and it offers inventory, purchase orders and reporting, but it is not a general ledger, MRP or enterprise ERP. Most mid-market buyers keep accounting and financial consolidation in a separate system.

Does Square offer an MCP server or AI assistant?

Square AI is an in-product assistant, currently in beta, that answers natural-language questions about your business using your data, industry trends and web search, and can suggest Square features. Payments fraud monitoring uses machine learning, and an AI voice-ordering beta answers calls for food and beverage sellers. None of the pages reviewed mention a Model Context Protocol server or bring-your-own-model keys.
