Prefect

Durable orchestration for data, ML, and agents.

By Prefect Technologies, Inc. · 4.2/5 Value-Position score (estimate)

Positioning guardrails

Best for

  • Python-centric data, ML and platform teams that want durable orchestration without writing retry, state or recovery logic themselves.
  • Teams replacing brittle cron jobs or hand-built Airflow DAGs with plain Python flows that branch, loop and create tasks at runtime.
  • Regulated enterprises that must keep code and data inside their own VPC via hybrid execution, with only metadata in Prefect Cloud.
  • Platform teams that need SOC 2 Type II, RBAC, SSO (SAML/OIDC), SCIM, IP allowlisting and audit logs.
  • AI and agent teams that want an official MCP server and the FastMCP framework to connect agents to internal systems.

Ideal size: 20–500 people · Scale-up or enterprise with an in-house Python data/ML platform team

Not for

  • Non-Python teams, or shops that need a visual low-code DAG designer rather than a code-first framework.
  • Companies that want a fully managed SaaS which hosts their workflow source code and execution data.
  • Teams with only a handful of simple scheduled jobs that a cloud provider's native scheduler already covers.
  • Buyers who require FedRAMP, CMMC or ISO 27001 evidence today: no source claims any of them.

Bottom line

Prefect is a Python-first workflow orchestration platform for data, ML and agents. Plain @flow and @task decorators turn Python functions into durable, observable pipelines, with retries, caching and recovery built in. Prefect Cloud adds a managed control plane, Serverless compute, audit logs, SSO/SCIM and RBAC, while hybrid execution keeps code and data in the customer's VPC. A free Hobby tier and a $100/mo Starter plan make it easy to start; Enterprise is custom.

Frequently asked questions

What does Prefect cost for a mid-market team?

Prefect Cloud has a free Hobby tier (2 users, 5 deployments, 500 Serverless minutes a month), a Starter plan at $100/month flat for 3 users and 20 deployments, a Team plan at $100 per user per month for 4–8 users with service accounts and a 24-hour audit log, and custom Enterprise pricing with SSO, RBAC/ACLs, SCIM, IP allowlisting, PrivateLink and a 99.9% uptime SLA. Eight Team seats run roughly $9,600 a year. Enterprise is billed annually; paid plans can be billed monthly.

How long does implementation take before we see value?

Prefect's own framing is that your first flow takes minutes: you add @flow and @task decorators to ordinary Python functions and Prefect Serverless runs them on managed compute with no infrastructure to stand up. Teams with stricter requirements use the hybrid model instead, adding lightweight workers inside their own Kubernetes, ECS or Docker environment, which is closer to a platform-engineering task than a migration project. Budget days to a first production flow and a couple of weeks to move a business-critical pipeline.

Does our source code or data leave our infrastructure?

Not in the recommended hybrid model. Prefect Cloud hosts the control plane and metadata, and workers poll outbound-only from your environment, so no inbound network access is required and Prefect never accesses your workflow source code, task parameter values or customer data. Metadata stored includes flow and task parameter names, flow parameter values, workflow logs (which can be disabled) and encrypted configuration blocks. Managed execution, where Prefect runs your code, exists but is optional.

Is Prefect secure and compliant enough for a regulated industry?

The security page states SOC 2 Type II certification, GDPR compliance and HIPAA readiness, with TLS 1.2+ in transit, encryption at rest with workspace-unique keys, mandatory multi-factor authentication, annual third-party penetration testing and multi-AZ high availability. RBAC, SSO via SAML 2.0/OIDC, SCIM directory sync, IP allowlisting and audit logs are offered, mostly from the Team plan upward. Flatiron Health is a published customer running cancer research pipelines. No FedRAMP or ISO 27001 claim is published.

Can our AI coding assistants and agents work with Prefect?

Yes. Prefect publishes an official MCP server that connects assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI to your Prefect environment for read-only inspection of deployments, flow runs, task runs and logs, with integrated documentation search. Prefect also maintains FastMCP, its open-source framework for building MCP servers. The server is read-only and scoped by RBAC. Prefect does not publish native AI features inside its own orchestration product.

What does the Dagster Labs acquisition mean for buyers?

Prefect acquired Dagster Labs in July 2026, bringing two orchestration products under one company. Prefect states that nothing changes for users of either product: Dagster keeps its name and open-source licence, and no customer action is required. Buyers evaluating Prefect should still confirm roadmap overlap directly, since the pages reviewed did not detail how the products will converge.
