Positioning guardrails

Best for

  • K-12 English and ELA departments grading hundreds of essays per term who need rubric-aligned feedback back within 1-2 days.
  • Districts standardising writing assessment against state rubrics such as STAAR, AP, B.E.S.T., CCSS and Regents.
  • Schools already on Google Classroom, Canvas or Schoology that want one-click assignment import and grade push-back.
  • Higher-ed and enterprise writing programmes that need API access, custom roles and a dedicated account manager.

Ideal size: Single teacher up to a multi-school district people · K-12 or higher-ed institution with an existing writing curriculum and an LMS

Not for

  • Assessment of non-writing work such as maths, science labs or multiple-choice testing.
  • Buyers who want fully autonomous grading - CoGrader requires a teacher to review every score and comment.
  • Organisations that require FedRAMP, HIPAA or on-premises deployment, none of which the vendor claims publicly.
  • Paper-only schools with no LMS, where scanning and CSV export add manual steps.

CoGrader uses rubric-based AI to score essays and short answers, generate glow/grow feedback, check grammar, run AI-detection and plagiarism screens, and surface class-level growth areas. It is marketed as an AI teaching assistant, but no BYOK option and no per-action AI audit log are documented, so keyModel and auditLevel stay unknown.

Bottom line

CoGrader is a rubric-based AI grader for written assignments, used by 100,000+ teachers at 16,000+ US schools. Teachers import assignments from Google Classroom, Canvas or Schoology, grade against state or custom rubrics, and push scores and feedback back to the LMS, with every score reviewed before students see it. A free tier covers 150 submissions a month; paid individual and district plans add grammar and originality checks, analytics and admin controls. Scoring is validated against official state raters.

Frequently asked questions

What does CoGrader cost for a school or district?

Teachers start free with 150 student submissions a month at no cost. The Individual plan is $19 a month, or $15 a month billed annually, and adds 350 submissions, grammar and originality checks and class analytics. Schools and districts are quoted based on size and include unlimited submissions, bulk user management, institution-wide reporting and training; higher-ed and enterprise add API access and custom SLAs. Districts can pay by purchase order or invoice.

How accurate is the AI grading, and who owns the final score?

The vendor reports that in a June 2026 validation study of 600 Texas STAAR responses, CoGrader's scores landed within one point of official TEA raters in 98.5% of cases, with 79.3% an exact match. CoGrader is designed as an aid rather than a replacement: teachers review and can adjust every score and comment before students see it, and the vendor states the educator remains responsible for final grades.

Does CoGrader train AI models on student work?

No. CoGrader's privacy policy states it does not use customer data - student work, assignment questions, rubrics, prompts or AI outputs - to train, fine-tune or develop any AI model, and that its AI service providers are contractually prohibited from using that data to train or improve their models. Only de-identified content is sent to providers including Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic.

Which systems does CoGrader integrate with?

Google Classroom is available to all users with two-way sync; Canvas and Schoology integration is offered on school and district plans. Import and export is supported for Blackboard, Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Brightspace, Eduphoria and DMAC, and PDFs, DOCX files or photos of handwriting can be uploaded with gradebook CSV export. An open API is available on higher-ed and enterprise plans.

Can a district standardise grading across many schools?

Yes. School and district packages include bulk user management and admin controls, a shared rubric library, institution-wide analytics and reporting, training and onboarding, and priority support with a 24-hour response target. District packages add a multi-school dashboard with school- and grade-level progress tracking.

How long does implementation take?

Most teachers start on the free tier and grade their first set the same day: sign up, connect Google Classroom or upload files, attach a rubric from the built-in library, then push scores and feedback back to the LMS. School-wide rollouts add training and onboarding, and district plans are quote-based.
